Taylor St. Jacques Wins $25,000 DAWTS Show Jumping Derby at the 43rd Hampton Classic Horse Show

Bridgehampton, N.Y. – Sept. 2, 2018 – Taylor St. Jacques, 19, won the $25,000 DAWTS Junior/Amateur Owner 1.45m Show Jumping Derby Sunday morning at the Hampton Classic, on the final day of competition of this year’s horse show.

Topping an original entry list of 26, St. Jacques and Qantor Des Etisses were the only combination to post a clean round in the jump off field of five, over the course designed by Canadian Michel Vaillancourt.

“I thought the first-round course was large, and quite long,” said St. Jacques following the class. “I was a little nervous going in, but frankly I think that worked to my advantage – I had to really ride every step. My horse went in there and he was doing exactly what I asked. He was waiting for me to tell him what I wanted him to do.”

Lacey Gilbertson was able to qualify two for the jump-off, but had an unfortunate fall from her first horse, Echo D, immediately prior to St. Jacques entering the ring.

St. Jacques addressed the plan for following a ride in which the rider had fallen off.

“We had talked about that jump (the large natural hedge) while walking the course. You needed to go wide and make sure you had enough room. Turning back to it my horse slipped a little and it made me nervous, but I was far enough from the jump that I was able to recover and I think that was a major factor in why I was able to jump a clean round.

“Winning a class like this is unbelievable! We don’t get the chance to ride over the natural obstacles – up the bank and over the hedges – very often. The atmosphere at the Hampton Classic is amazing, with all the spectators and such a beautiful venue. To win this class really means a lot, it was one I was gearing up for this year as one of my peak shows. It went even better than I had thought it might!”

Second place went to Charlise Casas with Rembrandt Blue and third to Kelly Arani and Esprit.

In addition to winning the Derby, St. Jacques was awarded the Amateur-Owner Jumper 1.40m championship. The reserve championship went to Arani with Esprit.

The Junior Jumper 1.40m championship sponsored by Swan Creek Farm was awarded to Casas with Rembrandt Blue. Reserve went to Sloan Hopson with Dalida.
