Traverse City, Mich. – July 23, 2017 – Sunday at the Flintfields Horse Park was action-packed, offering an array of activities for families and spectators to enjoy such as the JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show, a bounce house, balloon artist, boutique shopping, food vendors, including The Green Onion food truck, and more as part of the highly anticipated WTCM Family Fun Day. The afternoon led up to the main event of Week Three at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival (GLEF): the $50,000 Great Lakes Grand Prix CSI2*, presented by North Face Farm.

Mexico’s Santiago Lambre and his own Dingeman bested an original starting field of 30 international horses and athletes and outpaced a six-horse jump-off to take home the week’s top prize.

The course, designed by 2016 Rio Olympic course builder Guilherme Jorge of Brazil, challenged horses and riders over 13 obstacles in the first round. Those who successfully completed the course with no faults returned for the tie-breaking round over a shortened course.

Speed was definitely the key to winning on Sunday as five of the six horse-and-rider combinations jumped a second clear round in the jump-off. Germany’s Wilhelm Genn and Eduardo Leon’s Bugatti were the first pair to crank up the pace as they galloped across the timers in 38.87 seconds as third in the jump-off order. Lambre and the 9-year-old KWPN gelding followed and outran Genn by one second to take over the top spot in 37.82 seconds for first place. Genn and Bugatti would settle for second place once again on Sunday, after also finishing second in Friday’s $35,000 Welcome Stake CSI2*.

Finishing in third place was Meagan Nusz (USA) and Waomi, owned by Amalaya Investments, in 39.14 seconds.

Week Four of GLEF kicks off on Wednesday and will feature international show jumping highlights such as the $35,000 Welcome Stake CSI2* on Friday, July 28, and the $50,000 Flintfields Farm Grand Prix CSI2*, presented by Amalaya Investments, on Sunday, July 30, at the Flintfields Horse Park.

On Dingeman:
“I’ve had [Dingeman] since he was 4 years old. I bought him in Europe and I’ve been training him for five years now. He started to compete at the grand prix level this year and we’ve had a lot of good results so far. He jumped great. He’s a very careful horse and is doing better and better. I hope he can keep going like this.”

On his jump-off round:
“I saw [Wilhelm] go before me, and he’s a very fast rider, and I turned inside to number three and saved a lot of time. I was also really fast to the last two fences as well.”

On GLEF:
“This is my first time here. It’s an unbelievable facility. I’m very happy and the horses are happy. The grounds are fantastic. I hope to come back next year! I stay here three more weeks and then I go to New York next month.”

The Vankampen Ring highlighted the $5,000 Gene & Georgetti USHJA National Hunter Derby on Sunday, which saw 23 horses and riders compete in the first round over the Keith Bollotte-designed course.

The top 12 returned to try to impress the panel of judges once more in the handy round, but it was Winn Alden and Marshall, owned by Southern Arches LLC based in Saint Louis, Missouri, who topped the field. The pair was sitting in fourth place after the first round with a score of 85.5, and showcased adjustability and skillful tight turns, in addition to taking two out of the three high options, to earn a 90 in the handy round for a total score of 175.5 to secure the win.

Sunday’s win was extra special for Alden and her team as it was Marshall’s final competition before retiring at the age of 18. The Royal Dutch Warmblood gelding also received the Platinum Performance Hunter Horse of the Week following his win. To top it off, Alden was awarded a bottle of wine, courtesy of Black Star Farms, and a gift certificate for a free custom portrait from Kristi’s Canvas.

Behind Alden by half of a point was Melissa Donnelly and Corlando 49, owned by Elizabeth Becker. They finished on a total score of 175, with scores of 85 and 90 between both rounds, for second place honors. Rounding out the top three was Amanda Dougherty and Mindy H. Hildebrand’s Sagaro with a combined score of 174.

With weekly national derby competitions held each Sunday throughout the 2017 circuit, GLEF will also feature a $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby during Week Four on Saturday, July 29.

On Marshall:
“Patty Taylor, who owns [Marshall], showed him and then she had a hip replacement about when I started to work for her. I’ve done a few other derbies on him and he’s won a couple. We brought him here so she could ride. He just felt good so we thought we’d do this for fun and then he was so good. It was meant to be! This is my last class on him. He’ll retire and his mom will still ride him around. He goes to Florida with us and she’ll ride him around there and then he comes back to Saint Louis during the summer.”

On what set her handy round apart from the other competitors:
“I think the inside turn I did to the in-and-out [really stood out to the judges]. My other horse actually went much better but I galloped really hard to the last jump to see what he would do because he’s young and he got a little worried about it, but this guy I knew I could trust.”

On GLEF and her team:
“I love coming here. Last year we came for two weeks and that was my first time. This year we’re here for four weeks. I’ve had a lot of success in the jumpers. I love the jumper ring. I also love doing the hunters down here in the Vankampen Ring, it’s quite nice. I love the people here and the town is great. It’s one of my favorite places to come to. I want to thank Southern Arches because they’ve made dreams come true left and right that I never thought would happen. Susan Baginski at Baskin Farm trains us and she’s been a huge confidence builder and a big supporter. It’s been amazing.”

On Sutherland:
“I just got [the ride on] Sutherland a month ago. Peter [Pletcher] showed him in the High Performance 3’3″ all during Wellington and WEF and then I got the chance to ride him. I’m really happy that Peter trusts me with him because he’s a really sensitive horse but when you’ve got him going well, he’s amazing. He likes to win and he likes to put his best out there.”

On his performances on Saturday:
“My first round was really good. Everything was really smooth. I’m still trying to get to know him and staying smooth all of the time is really hard, but we’re doing a good job I think. In the second round, I wanted to do exactly the same. We got a little less fluid but it was still ok. I was really happy with our scores.”

On GLEF:
“This is a really nice show with really nice accommodations. Everything is perfect. I just love being here. I love the lake, people and also the climate. It’s a perfect show for the horses, riders and trainers.”
