Mexico’s Santiago Lambre and Doloris Open Week Five with a Win in $37,000 Douglas Elliman 1.45m Classic CSI5*

Wellington, Fla – Feb. 5, 2020 – Week Five of WEF kicked off Wednesday, Feb. 5, marking the first day of FEI CSI5* competition during the 2020 series. International athletes and their equine partners took to the International Ring for the $37,000 Douglas Elliman 1.45m Classic CSI5*. The competition saw 66 horse and rider pairs tackle the power and speed courses, but in the end, it was Santiago Lambre (MEX) aboard his own mare Doloris that took top honors.

The track set by course designers Anthony D’Ambrosio and Andy Christiansen Jr. challenges riders and their mounts over 12 obstacles in the power and speed format. For the power phase, the time allowed was set to 45 seconds. The speed phase began after fence six and the time tightened to 37 seconds. The course did not provide a lot of options, so speed and efficient turns were required from competitors during both phases. Todd Minikus (USA) set the pace early on with a clear round and second phase time of 26.29 seconds. It wasn’t until midway through the order that Minikus was unseated by Ireland’s Darragh Kenny, with a clear round in 25.745 seconds. Lambre entered the ring shortly after and turned on the speed from the beginning of his round, going clean with a blazing fast time of 24.82 seconds in the speed phase. Many tried to top Lambre, but none could touch his time.

Lambre and his mare Doloris, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood, have been competing together for five years. Lambre imported the mare from Europe when she was 6 years old where she already had three years of success competing on the international stage. Since the pair’s arrival to the United States, they have been racking up wins at competitions in Wellington, Florida, Tryon, North Carolina, Saugerties, New York, and Traverse City, Michigan.

FEI showjumping competition will continue throughout the week, featuring the $401,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix CSI5* taking place on Saturday, February 8, as well as the $50,000 Rushy Marsh Grand Prix CSI5* that will kick-off Sunday, February 9 at 2pm.

On Doloris:
“She came to the U.S. 2 years ago and she has had great seasons. She has jumped in a couple of grand prix classes, but this is her level, she is more comfortable in the 1.45m and 1.50m classes. I don’t want to push her too hard because in these types of classes she is more competitive. She’s very fast.”

On the course:
“I thought it was a nice course without too many difficult options. I was near the end so I could watch a little bit and try to do the same amount of strides as the riders that were leading. [Doloris] is really fast, so I think that made the difference.”

On his WEF plans:
“I have another horse I want to qualify for the [$401,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix CSI5*] and then [Doloris] will compete Friday. I try to only enter a couple of classes each week so that it’s not too much. I try to show a horse one week and then give them the next week off .”
