Wellington, Fla. – Feb. 11, 2018 – Sunday’s $70,000 Hollow Creek 1.50m Classic CSI 5* saw a total of 51 horse-and-rider combinations with no shortage of talented athletes, including World No. 3 McLain Ward (USA) who was competing aboard two horses, Bellefleur PS Z and Cartouche. After a competitive 17 horse jump-off, McLain Ward came out on top yet again on Bellefleur PS Z with a swift time of 35.93 seconds, almost two seconds faster than the second place finisher. Bellefleur PS Z is a 9-year-old Zangersheide mare owned by Ward’s godmother, Susan Heller and his daughter, Lilly Ward, who celebrated her third birthday on Friday.

Ward has seen many success throughout Week Five of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), including winning Thursday’s $132,000 WEF Challenge Cup Round 5 aboard HH Azur. Bellefleur PS Z also saw her share of success in Friday’s $35,000 Bainbridge 1.45m Classic CSI 5* where she and Ward took home another blue.

In second was Francisco Jose Mesquite Musa (BRA) riding Catch Me Imperio Egipicio, who is owned by Daniel Aguiar Morelli. Third place was captured by Eve Jobs (USA), who produced stellar rounds aboard her own Charleville.

Later in the day, the $50,000 Equiline Grand Prix CSI 2* win was captured by Paul O’Shea (IRL) and Imerald Van’T Voorhof, owned by Tequestrian Farms, LLC. O’Shea went last in the jump-off and used that to his advantage by clocking in a quick jump-off time of 36.84 seconds, which he credits to Imerald Van’T Voorhof’s scope and stride.

FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

McLain Ward – $70,000 Hollow Creek Classic CSI 5* Winner

On Sunday’s round with Bellefleur PS Z:
“She’s a horse I’ve been very excited about for awhile. We’ve had her since she was 6, turning 7, and we always thought that she was incredibly careful and game. She came along last summer beautifully, and this year she won a bunch of classes at the end of the year. She’s a real winner. We stepped her up here, and I think now she’s won two ranking classes. She should have won the first day also, but I made a dumb mistake in the second to last. We flirted the last two days whether we would show her or not today, because she made such a good effort on Friday and we thought we shouldn’t overdo it. But we decided to walk the course and see. I didn’t think the combinations were crazy so I thought no time like the present.”

On his partnership with Bellefleur PS Z:
“This is a horse I’ve had from the beginning and I’ve been able to not only plan out her career, but try to put her in a positive way, and when you have a horse that’s that careful it makes a big difference. She’s special for me because my godmother owns half, and she told me the only way that she would do it is if my daughter owned the other half because that might curve me a little bit from selling her too fast. I haven’t had any offers to buy her because I’m sure like everyone assumes, when you have one that good you don’t want to sell. I don’t really want to sell her; I think that she has a bright future. At face value, I don’t think she’s a championship horse; she’s super careful and not very big. But you see horses like this, with that kind of heart and they just keep doing it and that what she does. I wouldn’t want to set a limit on what she can do.”

Paul O’Shea – $50,000 Equiline Grand Prix CSI 2* Winner

On Sunday’s jump-off:
“I had the advantage of going last, which is obviously a big help. When I walked the jump-off I didn’t know if there would be seven strides to the double or eight strides to the last fence. But then after seeing [Rebecca Conway] go it looked like it was really there. That was a big help today.”

On his partnership with Imerald Van’T Voorhof:
“Imerald is owned by the Tisbo family, I’m very grateful to them for letting me ride him. [Lauren Tisbo] was here to watch and support us today and that was very nice. Imerald was second in the first WEF Challenge here when there was a three-way tie for second place. He is really just up to this level. I’ve been riding him for about a year. Imerald is extremely scopey and brave. He has a massive stride and that was useful today with the long gallop down to the double. To be able to really open him up with his big stride and scope was helpful down to the last fence.”

On having a 2* and a 5* show:
“It’s fantastic idea. It’s great for young horse just coming out and great for inexperienced horses and riders. It really fits in well I think. It’s so hard to even have a horse for a 5* level, so I think that it’s a great idea.”
