New York, N.Y. – Sept. 21, 2017 – Bright lights and city skyscrapers laid the backdrop for world class show jumping featured in New York City’s iconic Wollman Rink at the southern part of Central Park, Manhattan. The Rolex Central Park Horse Show returned Wednesday for its fourth year to open with the U.S. Open Arabian Horse Show. Thursday kicked off the first day of jumping and highlighted the U.S. Open $40,000 FEI CSX Speed Class where Hardin Towell claimed the win aboard Lucifer V.

Thirty international riders challenged Olympic course designer Guilherme Jorge’s 1.45m track, with judging based on the fastest time where faults resulted in additional seconds. Towell (USA) and the 11-year-old gelding, owned by Evergate Stables, were last in the ring, but came in with a vengeance after placing third in the  $216,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping New York CSI4*-W at the American Gold Cup last weekend. The pair kept all rails up and flew to a quick time of 53.53 seconds.

Hot on their heels was Kristen Vanderveen (USA) and Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili. Although they had one rail, their speedy time still landed them near the top of the leaderboard. The 12-year-old stallion flew to the fastest time of the night in 51.98 seconds which became a final time of 55.98 after the four penalties were added.

FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Jack Hardin Towell –U.S. Open $40,000 FEI CSX Speed Class winner

On the course:
“I thought the course was nice. Some twisty turns at the start, but it wasn’t so big. Today was a very competitive class but the jumps were a little smaller and I have a lot of confidence in my horse so I took some shots and he was fantastic. I thought I was pretty quick to the second to last and I thought my turns were nice. Last week in the [American] Gold Cup I ended up third, but I didn’t trust my horse and myself to the first line and the second line and I had the third jump down and I would’ve been third even if I had been clean, so today I decided to believe in my horse and I felt fast today.”

Daniel Bluman – U.S. Open $40,000 FEI CSX Speed Class, second place

On Bacara D’archonfosse:
“The mare felt really well again tonight. We’ve been jumping great in the last few shows. I walked the course. Like Hardin said it wasn’t too big. It was a nice round to try to compete. If you have a horse that can jump well two days and try to go fast and the next day be ready for the grand prix, it’s a horse that you can try to win the class. She jumped very well. I thought I was putting enough pressure. I got to see Kristen go after me and she jumped a beautiful round. She was super fast. At that point I figured that it was very likely that Hardin at the end would get me. I am happy with the second place, happy for him and looking forward to tomorrow.”

Kristen Vanderveen – U.S. Open $40,000 FEI CSX Speed Class, third place

On Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili:
“He is super fast and the small ring here actually plays to his advantage because he’s real quick on the turns. I felt like we were very tight everywhere and then he ended up catching me off guard by the end of the course he was so ready for the turns that I cut in a little too aggressively there at the combination and it caught up with me, but I was very pleased with him tonight. He’s so rideable for me and he’s listening all the time.”

Mimi Gochman – $5,000 Junior/Amateur 1.20m Class winner

On the Central Park Horse Show:
“I used to have to parties in [Wollman Rink] for my birthday – skating and all that. It’s amazing to see the transformation from a freezing cold rink to an amazing show with beautiful backgrounds and it’s such a privilege to come here and show in the middle of New York City. It’s the heart of the city, it’s amazing. Central Park has always been a great place to hang out, but I never knew I’d be able to show in Central Park. It’s such a special show.”
