Wellington, Fla. – Jan. 12, 2019 – The first week of the 2019 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) welcomed its unique edition of the popular “Saturday Night Lights” competition with the 11th annual Battle of the Sexes, presented by Wellington Regional Medical Center, where ten female athletes battled ten male athletes to gain points across three phases of competition. The girls dominated to capture an early lead and reclaim the victory for team pink after only falling to the boys once in 2018.
Led by Nicole Bellissimo as the captain, team pink also included Amanda Derbyshire, Abigail Mcardle, Jessica Mendoza, Sydney Shulman, Carly Anthony, Maggie Jayne, KC van Aarem, Taylor Land and Kristen Vanderveen.
The blue team was made up of Charlie Jayne as captain, David Blake, Alex Granato, Darragh Kenny, Michael Tokuruk, Andy Kocher, Andrew Bourns, Daniel Coyle and Spencer Smith.
The contest was held in three phases, consisting of a faults converted speed round, a relay race, and a match race. The competition was tight in round one, with the score at the end tying at five to five. In round two, it was team pink who pulled ahead, ending with 20 points over the team blue’s score of 5. Round three almost saw the boys even the score, when they won the first three match ups. However, with the girls dominant lead from phase two, the boys could not catch up and it was team pink who came out on top on Saturday night.
