Temecula, Calif. – June 2, 2019 – The four weeks of the 2019 Temecula Valley National Horse Show came to a close Sunday, with Galway Downs hosting one final day of opportunities for exhibitors to ride for the prize money. In the $7,500 Tack of the Town High Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.45m Jumper Classic, Emma Reichow and Forever Alve saved the best for last and outshone the competition as the only clear pair to emerge victorious, while Michelle Kerivan jockeyed Cornwall 13 to success in the $5,000 Ogilvy Equestrian Medium Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.35m Jumper Classic ahead of a 6-horse jump-off.
The feature class of the day, the $7,500 Tack of the Town High Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.45m Jumper Classic attracted a talented field of junior and amateur riders to the Audi Grand Prix Arena, presented by Evergate Stables, to vie for the greatest share of the purse. As the first in the start list, Katherine Dash and Chloe were the debut pair to tackle course designer Olaf Petersen, Jr.’s (GER) 15-fence track and concluded the course in a final time of 79.664 seconds with one unlucky rail down, which began the pattern for following exhibitors. As the class progressed, it appeared as though a jump-off between the multiple 4-fault teams would be necessary as no pairs could achieve the desired result of a clear round. With only one duo left to ride, Dash and Chloe, Kerivan aboard her own Duc De Rhoan and Taylor Harris with the reins on Diacando each waited to hear if they would return for a final test.
Last in the ring and with the chance to claim the victory with a clean round, owner-rider Reichow and Forever Alve played it safe, carefully maneuvering their way around the winding sequence of obstacles in 75.206 seconds and crossing the finish line with all the fences still upright. As the only penalty-free partnership, Reichow and Forever Alve clinched the lead spot in the lap of honor, the second time in as many years that Reichow has jumped to the head of the leaderboard in the same class. In 2018 during the inaugural circuit in Temecula, Reichow navigated Cubiki to the win in the $5,000 Kask High Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.45m Jumper Classic. The young rider added the $7,500 Tack of the Town High Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.45m Jumper Classic victory to her growing collection, while Kerivan and Duc De Rhoan claimed second place, followed by Harris and Harris Equestrian’s Diacando in third.
Prior to upping the fences to the 1.45m height, the $5,000 Ogilvy Equestrian Medium Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.35m Jumper Classic brought contenders to the ring to contest the identical course designed by Petersen, Jr. Of the initial field, only six horse-and-rider partnerships qualified for a turn over the short course following successful first round trips, with Sabine Cooper and Quantas serving as the pathfinders in 37.315 seconds, though they accumulated 8 faults due to two downed rails. Though still not fault-free, Hannah Ellerbrock subsequently piloted Lagos to the head of the leaderboard with a 4-fault time of 39.424 seconds, waiting to see if any future challengers would surpass them with two clear efforts. The leading pair didn’t have to wait long, as Zoe Brown and Abadan, owned by Harley Brown Equestrian, Inc., soon laid down the first successful performance over the short course in 39.277 seconds to take over the top spot.
One of the final combinations to take to the ring, Kerivan and her own Cornwall 13 sliced across the track and managed to better the time put forth by their earlier counterparts, clocking in at 37.367 seconds with all the fences still intact to eclipse the top pair and claim the lead. Though two more duos would earn slots in the jump-off, both pairs could not catch Kerivan and Cornwall 13’s time, solidifying them as the $5,000 Ogilvy Equestrian Medium Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.35m Jumper Classic winners. Clea Caddell and Spyglass Hill’s Campari earned second place with their quick time of 38.122 seconds, less than one second off the pace, and Brown and Abadan ranked third as the final double clear pair of the class.
Sunday’s competition concludes the four-week 2019 Temecula Valley National Horse Show series at Galway Downs, managed by Nilforushan Equisport Events.
FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE
Emma Reichow – $7,500 High Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.45m Jumper Classic winner
On her plan for today:
“With everyone having 4 faults, I just wanted to have a nice clear round. I wasn’t really worried about going fast because even with a time fault I would have won. My mare has been so great this week so I knew that she could do it. It wasn’t that nerve-wracking going in last with no clears, but it definitely was a lot nicer than having everyone go clear and having to put that pressure on yourself.”
On her horse:
“Her name is Forever Alve, we call her ‘Evie’ at home. She is 9 years old and I bought her last October. We have been taking our time with her, figuring her out and moving up, and she’s been absolutely amazing and so fun. She’s so scopey and trustworthy, it’s a really nice feeling going into the bigger classes. We have a really good bond so I think that has helped us move into the bigger classes. She’s quite opinionated so we have had to try to figure out the bit and type of ride that she likes, and that’s why we have taken our time. We have jumped her in a couple of classes because she is capable of that. We are hoping to keep moving up from here.”
On finishing with a win:
“It’s so exciting. I love this show so much – they put on such a good show. It was really nice to win on the final day here. I actually think I won this class last year so it was exciting to come back and do it again. It was my last class today so it was really exciting to get the win.”
