Out of the 34 horse-and-rider combinations to enter the $10,000 Franktown Meadows 3′ Hunter Derby Presented by THIS Equine Insurance, it was the young hunter Earl Grey, owned by Leslie Shein and ridden by Kylee Arbuckle, who exceeded expectations to take home the blue ribbon. Ending only half of a point behind, Jenny Karazissis and Big Shot owned by Dulcie Lou Morris placed second, followed by Jenny Karazissis again on Legacy owned by Emily Sukert.

Earl Grey was purchased a year ago by Leslie Shein, “We bought him in Wellington, Florida last year and he hadn’t shown much at all, he had basically been doing dressage. We brought him West and Kylee has been bringing him along as a Hunter since then. He has really grown so much in the past year, it’s been amazing. He has become so much more than we expected. I was looking for a 3′ horse and somehow I got a 4′ Derby horse. He is just a beautiful horse. I compete with him in the amateur 2’6″ classes and he has been really good for me, he seems to be able to go back and forth in the height divisions. Tomorrow will be his first International Hunter Derby and we are looking forward to it.”

Kylee Arbuckle smiled from ear to ear as she recalled her Derby win with Earl Grey, “I am so excited to be here it is such a great show, super fun and I am having a really wonderful time. Earl Grey gives me a lot of confidence, he is so brave and so I decided that I would go for it in the handy round and it all came together. I am looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. I am so proud of him.”

Ned Glynn of Sonoma Valley Stables was thrilled with the team win. “I am so proud of both Earl Grey and Kylee. This is the first time on grass for this horse and although he is a little green in competing in Derbies he did an amazing job and was not afraid of any of the jumps. Kylee was also super confident in his ability and was able to make the inside turns in the handy round that probably won them the class. I really think the skies the limit for this horse. I would also like to thank the sponsors of this event, without them this would not be possible.”
