Coyle and Sweetnam Secure One-Two Finish for Ireland in $35,000 Douglas Elliman 1.45m Classic CSI5*

Wellington, Fla. – March 7, 2018 – The $35,000 Douglas Elliman 1.45m Classic wrapped up CSI5* competition in the International Arena on Wednesday to kick-off Week Nine of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). The class saw exactly 60 entries on board to tackle the 14-obstacle course. As one of the last to compete in the field, Ireland’s Daniel Coyle swept just under Shane Sweetnam’s previous winning time to claim the victory aboard Tienna.

Structured as a power and speed class, the course  allowed for a time of 37 seconds over the first seven fences and 42 seconds over the remaining seven. Section two of the course began after fence six and athlete’s total faults were combined at the end of their round. While a technical course, the time-allowed did not pose an issue and the class saw almost exactly one third of its challengers finish completely fault-free.

Santiago Lambre of Mexico took the early lead at the halfway point with his mount D’Artagnan only to be bested five rounds later by Ireland’s  Sweetnam. Sweetnam returned on his second mount of the class, Spy Coast Farm LLC’s 17-year-old Swedish Warmblood stallion Cyklon 1083, and cleared the final set of timers within 28.707 seconds to overtake the lead. Lambre returned several trips later with Doloris to try and reclaim his victory but finished just behind Sweetnam with a final time of 29.528 seconds.

Lambre held the third and fourth place positions for the remainder of the class, which secured Mexico double placings in the top five. Ireland seemed to have a sure victory in Sweetnam until 23-year-old Coyle entered aboard Tienna.

The 10-year-old Canadian Sport Horse mare is a homebred product of Coyle’s partnership with owner Ariel Grange and has not competed since early February in Ocala, Florida. Coyle and Tienna held the fastest time through the first set of obstacles at 30.1 seconds and continued their blazing pace into the jump-off portion, which carried them home in 28.5 seconds. Wednesday’s victory was Coyle’s first CSI5* win of the 2018 season.

CSI5* competition will return to the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center on Thursday with the running of the $132,000 WEF Challenge Cup Round IX CSI5* in preparation for Saturday night’s $384,000 Douglas Elliman Grand Prix CSI5*.

Daniel Coyle – $35,000 Douglas Elliman 1.45m Classic CSI5* winner

On Wednesday’s win:
“This is my first 5* win of the year here so it’s exciting. It was very competitive. The way Shane rode, there was very little room for any mistakes; he had a brilliant round and there was almost no real difference in the times.”

On Tienna:
“She hasn’t really been in her regular form until last week when she won the 1.40m and I thought, ‘Okay she’s starting to come back in form now.’ She’s been a fantastic mare and she’s homebred, which makes her a little bit more special for Ariel and the farm. She’s always been one of my favorites. She is a typical chestnut mare in that she really likes to go her own way, and if you get in the way of how she likes to do things too much she really doesn’t like it. So if she has a way she likes to go and likes to win then of course that’s how we’ll go.”
