Ashley Shaw and Adico Jump to Win High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers in Kentucky

Lexington, Ky. – Aug. 17, 2019 – The penultimate day of competition at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park attracted junior and amateur athlete to the show ring for a chance at claiming a blue ribbon. Operating as a one-round speed class, the High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers were hotly-contested, with Ashley Shaw and Adico ultimately capturing victory as the most efficient duo. In the Medium Amateur-Owner Jumpers, Olivia Woodson and Cachacco topped the field as the fastest pair of only two clear duos.

Ashley Shaw and Adico

First to tackle the track in the High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers, Anna Beth Athey and her own Cantero Da Lagoa served as the pathfinders for the class with a clear ride in 75.015 seconds to put the pressure on the rest of the field. The class continued with Kristen Berian aboard Important S, Alexandra Smith riding Catan H, Keely McIntosh with Inne Van De Plataan, Siena Vasan and Tokyo D’Ellipse each turning in fault-free rides, but they could not catch the leaders’ time. One of the final partnerships to contest the course, Shaw and Adico managed to best the frontrunners with a quick and careful ride in 71.178 seconds to jump to the top spot, which they maintained to claim the blue ribbon ahead of eight entries with zero faults.

Anna Beth Athey and Caribic

The last two horse-and-rider pairs turned in solid performances, with Athey and her own Caribic earning the reserve spot in a clear 73.215 seconds while owner-rider Ashley Vogel and Thalie D’Anjou rounded out the podium in a penalty-free 73.230 seconds. Athey also finished in fourth position aboard Cantero Da Lagoa to finish with two horses near the top of the standings.

Before the fences were raised, a field of competitors challenged the course in the one-round Medium Amateur-Owner Jumpers. With only one chance to showcase their speed and carefulness, exhibitors had to make their trips count for a shot at the title. Riding early in the order, Woodson and her own Cachacco were the first pair to turn in a fault-free performance, setting the bar at 70.596 seconds for subsequent horse-and-rider combinations. As the class progressed, Woodson and Cachacco maintained their lead as rails fell for every competitor. Entering the ring as the final entry, Alliy Moyer and Moyer Farm LLC’s Galway Bay Pandora were the last to have an opportunity to overthrow the early leaders. Though Moyer and Galway Bay Pandora logged a clear ride, only the second of the class, they were too slow to take over the lead, tripping the timers in 79.000 seconds.

Ashley Vogel and Thalie D’Anjou

As the fastest of the two clear rounds, Woodson and Cachacco clinched first prize, followed by Moyer and her mount in second place. The fastest of the 4-faulters, owner-rider Isabella Norton piloted Heidi Ask to third position with a time of 65.000 seconds.

Jumper competition at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show will continue through Sunday with the $40,000 Bluegrass Festival Grand Prix, sponsored by Audi of Lexington, bringing elite show jumping competitors to the Rolex Stadium once again for their shot at the top prize.

FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Ashley Shaw – High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper winner

On Adico:
“I’ve had him for two years now. I love how much heart he has. He is super brave and super willing. He really focuses in on the jump, which makes speed classes like today really fun. He is just a really fun, good-hearted horse.”

On the speed round:
“Adico is really fast across the ground so that definitely helped. I know that I did one more stride than the other girls in one of the lines so I think just cantering away fast from each jump and keeping my part tidy is what pushed me into the lead.”

On Kentucky Horse Shows:
“I love the facilities here at these shows, especially showing in the Rolex. It’s one of my all-time favorites. It’s really fun to come and compete and there are so many beautiful horses to come and watch. To participate among some of the best riders is always a really fun and educational experience.”
