Miami, Fla. – April 13, 2017 – In the midst of sand and sunny skies came together some of the greatest names in international show jumping on the opening day of the third annual Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) Miami Beach CSI5* competition. Beach goers and show jumping fans watched as Switzerland’s Jane Richard Philips and Dieudonne de Guldenboom bested the field of 57 total contenders, seven of which were able to navigate the course fault-free to advance to the jump-off.

The course, designed by Italy’s Uliano Vezzani and Pier Francesco Bazzocchi, was comprised of 13 fences set at 1.50m/1.55m in height. Each rider was vying for a piece of the purse, but the course, set amongst the unfamiliar beach atmosphere, proved difficult for most.

Philips, a 34-year-old international show jumper, made the trek to the Sunshine State after victoriously competing in the first leg of the 2017 Longines Global Champions Tour held in Mexico City, Mexico, just last week. Philips and her mount kicked off the LGCT tour on a high note, earning valuable points after finishing in 10th place individually before her team, the Cannes Stars, secured an impressive ninth place position.

Philips competes in the FEI-formatted Global Champions League (GCL) for the Cannes Stars. Her teammates for the 2017 GCL season include Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum, Marco Kutscher, Guido Klatte and Christian Kukuk. The team will aim to earn as many points as possible throughout the GCL season, which has 15 total competitions across the globe.

Philips’ double-clear round made for a thrilling experience for bystanders on the beach new to the sport of show jumping. Many were hoping to catch a glimpse of the incredible two and four-legged international athletes and the roster boasted world-renowned names in the sport such as Scott Brash, Eric Lamaze and the world’s number one ranked rider, McLain Ward.

Philips piloted the 2003 Belgian Warmblood gelding over the first round in 74.66 seconds. She and her mount, who is sired by Nabab de Reve, were the final pair to tackle the jump-off, and despite the pressure of having to go last, were able to keep their composure to deliver a solid performance.

As they landed off the final Longines oxer headed towards the crowd, fans cheered with enthusiasm, watching as the scoreboard clocked in at the quickest time of 40.86 seconds.

Philips topped Ireland’s Bertram Allen, who finished second, by almost one and a half seconds in the jump-off. Allen, who exhibited Hector van d’Abdijhoeve, demonstrated a clear first round in 73.40 seconds. He then returned to the ring with the 10-year-old stallion to put forth yet another fast and clean ride in a mere 42.13 seconds.

Finishing up in third place was Italy’s Alberto Zorzi aboard Cornetto K. In addition to Phillips and Allen, Zorzi made it three riders who were clear in both rounds. Zorzi raced through the timers in the initial phase in 75.71 seconds and took the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding around the shortened course in only 42.26 seconds.

The second LGCT CSI5* competition will be held on Friday afternoon on South Beach in Miami, Florida, promptly at 3:30 p.m., and Philips will try to maintain her lead against 55 additional talented horse-and-rider teams. The LGCT Miami Beach CSI5* runs through Saturday afternoon, concluding with its highly-anticipated highlight event, the Longines GCT Grand Prix of Miami Beach CSI5*.
